Taking in My Son, Vietnam

We took a packaged tour to My Son and wound up on a big bus tour. I’m not very good at sticking with big groups of people and wandered off pretty quickly. A lot of this Hindu temple complex was ruined in the Vietnam war and the remaining bomb craters were a clear reminder of this –  some were huge.

There were a number of tours moving around so once I had this photo set up I had to wait quite a while for them all to move on. I have a version with no people in it but decided I liked this one with a backpacker looking up at one of the temples.

While on vacation in Provence I took a fantastic drive to and through the Verdon Gorge. On the way, I passed multiple small villages. The route takes you through a large military installation but there’s no sign of it as you pass through the forested hills.

This small village, called Ampus, was one of the many we passed by in this region.

Swiss Alpine Vista

While in Switzerland I took a drive away from my hotel in Honegg and made my way to a model village seemingly dropped off in the middle of nowhere. I was clearly there in the off season as the parking lot was huge with lots of spaces for tour buses but there was hardly another soul there.

I can’t remember what the place was called, but it was pretty cool. They’d disassembled old houses from all the different regions of Switzerland and reassembled them in this rambling mountainside village.

Lourmarin Corner, Provence, France

I just hung up a print I bought in the medieval town of Lourmarin in the Provence region of France so it seems fitting that I post a photo from there. After eating in a bustling restaurant, we had wandered away from the more touristy areas and I came across this interesting angled intersection.

Prehistoric Cave, Meteora, Greece

After leaving the monasteries in Meteora, my guide said, “So you’re interested in archaeology… do you want to to go to a cave with 130,000 year old footprints?”

Yes… yes was the answer.

He said it’s not a place he normally takes people but thought I’d be interested. It was really cool and not far from Meteora. It’s still an active dig, but they’ve built metal pathways to let you look down into it. Sure enough, there are fossolised footprints, seemingly made by children playing in the cave, along with numerous hearths.

The footprints were too deep for a photograph, but this is what the cave looks like from the back corner.

San Frediano in Cestello, Florence

This photo was pretty easy to find as I took it out of my hotel room window in Florence while there for meetings. In order to find out the name of the church, I had to use google street view to virtually walk my way over to the church from my hotel.

Close up of Temple of Apollo, Delphi, Greece

Here’s another view of what’s left of the temple of Apollo at Delphi. This is the angle that pilgrims would have approached from as they made their way up the sacred way. You’ve got to imagine it with a giant ornate pediment suspended high atop the columns that still remain.
