I was struggling to figure out where to go on vacation after a weekend in London when I saw a photo of this little island town called Burano, near Venice. I decided I had to go there to see it for myself. So, I booked a trip to Venice, once there I had to figure out how to get there. The journey is faaaaaar longer than Google had informed me. I’ll tell you more about it in another post.

When I stumbled my way upon this dock, I thought I’d discovered an awesome little secret spot to see the Rialto and watch the activity on the Grand Canal. I started taking some pictures when I saw a man approaching, holding a closed umbrella above his head. He was a tour-guide, and sure enough my quiet spot on a tiny dock on the Grand Canal was soon overrun by about 20 people. I decided to step back off the dock and wait until they all left, which only took a few minutes.

If you look in the background of this picture, you can see the Rialto bridge.

On our first day in Venice, my dad and I walked across the Rialto bridge and got fairly lost while wandering around on the other side. When it came time to find lunch, we worked our way back towards the Grand Canal and a Vaporetto stop. We hopped on the first one to pull up and were on our way to San Marco square. On the way, I saw the below building with gilded frescoes on its facade. I thought it was just a really fancy house, but it turns out it’s a landmark called the Palazzo Salviati.

This is actually the first photo I took in Venice while wandering, completely lost, in the general direction of the Rialto. I wound up combining two different photos so that I could have the gondola, and the flag with the lion of Venice unfurled in the same photo.

I’m back in London now, Bermuda on Sunday.

In my house in Bermuda I have a giant print of one of my first photos, taken in Amsterdam about 7 years ago. It’s looking a little worn out and I keep thinking I’d like to replace it, but can’t decide on a photo. So, I decided I could replace it with an up to date picture of the same place. So, I found the spot. It wasn’t anywhere near where I thought it was but I stumbled upon it within an hour of arriving. Unfortunately, things have changed, there were loads of tables stacked up blocking my view.

I kept wandering and spotted this blue bike looking back towards the same canal junction that is up on my wall.

On my first day in Amsterdam, immediately after an overnight flight from Bermuda, there was a beautiful wispy cloud draped blue sky. I was tired but decided I’d better get out and take advantage of it. It was a good decision, because it was grey and rainy for the rest of our trip!

This is a canal that runs underneath the Charles Bridge. As I came across this view I liked the shadow of the house falling on the other houses. Before long a boat passed through. I decided that this as just what I needed for a picture so I set up my tripod, got the camera ready and waited. As I’ve mentioned, in just about every post from Prague, it was cold. This was a particularly long wait. I enjoyed the funny looks I got and watching people walk up to snap a photo in the general direction of where my camera was facing before moving on. After a wait a boat passed through, but it was a little tiny thing that I didn’t think did the trick. So, I continued to wait. I think I’d been there for about half an hour when the boat I’d seen originally returned and this is the result.

This is a combination of 3 exposures. I used the selective anti-ghosting tool in Photomatix to select one exposure of the boat and the surrounding water.
